Job Summary

Libs Paving completed a comprehensive renovation of the Sam’s Club parking lot within a five-week deadline while keeping the store and fuel station operational. Divided into five main phases, the project included asphalt milling and paving, concrete and sidewalk improvements, sealcoating, joint sealing, and updated striping and signage. Our crews placed approximately 4,300 tons of Kentucky DOT-approved asphalt and 480 cubic yards of concrete. Additional improvements included new bollard covers and the conversion of mulch landscaping islands to river rock. The finished project refreshed the property’s appearance while improving pavement conditions, drainage, and accessibility.

Challenges

Maintaining access at a busy retail site required careful planning and daily communication with Sam’s Club management and the general contractor. With the store open 12 hours a day and the fuel station open 16 hours a day, seven days a week, crews coordinated work around customer traffic and daily deliveries. Early milling and paving, clearly marked work zones, and weekly updated phasing maps helped minimize disruptions while multiple crews worked across the site.

Deteriorated pavement, limited slope, and few drainage inlets added complexity to the renovation. The team surveyed existing conditions and adjusted grades within each phase to improve water flow and reduce potential ponding. Trimble GNSS technology supported surveying, grade control, and accurate layout, while careful planning addressed ADA requirements within the constraints of an existing parking lot and a two-inch mill-and-pave scope.
